Projects

2023-2024

Pasture chickens/Non-Market poultry

This is a wonderful project for all ages and interest levels and will include pasture poultry (egg layers), and show chickens.  Youth will learn about the chickens' health, well-being, anatomy, breeds, diseases, and day-to-day care. Youth and their adults are encouraged to take on a care shift with the Pacifica 4-H Farm flock. Under the umbrella of this project, youth have the opportunity to learn showmanship and breed standards, with youth who own a show bird able to enter the County Fair in June.

Goats/Sheep Market

Raising market lambs or goats  for the County Fair market lamb/goat competition. Youth will learn how to raise healthy lambs and goats. Focus is on feeding, exercising,  showmanship and fitting for show. Youth do not need to own their own lamb or goat to take this project.  Joining the project for one year before raising is encouraged.

Goats - Dairy

Youth who own, wish to own, or have a general interest in dairy goats have the opportunity to gain knowledge about health, maintenance, breeding, and showmanship.

This project will cover all-size dairy goats, including Nigerian Dwarf Goats and Pigmi Goats, which are considered small animals (available for youth 5 and older to own), and large goats (available for youth 9 and older to own).

Pen Pride

This project is open to all 4-H members aged 9 and up.  All youth raising animals on the farm this year will be required to participate in this community service project. Learning will take place through the Market Lamb/Goat project meetings and youth will share responsibility for feeding, weighing and exercising the lambs. This is a great opportunity to learn what it is like to raise livestock, without the commitment of having to do it on your own.

Market & Show Poultry

Interested in raising market chickens or turkeys for the County fair and preparing for the market chicken and turkey competitions? Youth will learn how to raise healthy chickens and turkeys. Focus is on brooding chicks and poults, pen set up and cleaning, feeding, and preparing for the show.

Million Tree Project

In this county wide project you'll have the opportunity to organize tree plantings as well as learn about international youth and forestry initiatives in places like Uganda and Tanzania.  This project offers the opportunity to practice website management and public speaking skills, learn grantsmanship, write articles, and of course, plant trees.

We will have four meetings, 1.5 hours each. The meeting will be held at the Sharp Park Library.

Ceramics

In this 6-week ceramics project, we will make several hand-built projects utilizing techniques such as clay slab, coil, and pinch, with fun textures and more. We will also cover glaze and decorating techniques. By the end of this project, each member will have a basic working knowledge of hand-building and have several completed pieces that can be entered in the San Mateo County Fair in June. 4-H Youth Members age 9 and older.
