Projects
2024-2025
Pasture chickens & Show Chickens
This is a wonderful project for all ages and interest levels and will include pasture poultry (egg layers), and show chickens. Youth will learn about the chickens' health, well-being, anatomy, breeds, diseases, and day-to-day care. Youth and their adults are encouraged to take on a care shift with the Pacifica 4-H Farm flock. Under the umbrella of this project, youth have the opportunity to learn showmanship and breed standards, with youth who own a show bird able to enter the County Fair in June.
Market Hogs
Ages 9+. The market hog project will focus on raising market hogs for auction at the San Mateo County Fair. Members will learn about equipment, nutrition, feeding, health care, training, fair requirements, marketing and sales. The ultimate goal is raising healthy hogs to auction at the June fair.
Goats - Dairy
Youth who own, wish to own, or have a general interest in dairy goats have the opportunity to gain knowledge about health, maintenance, breeding, and showmanship.
This project will cover all-size dairy goats, including Nigerian Dwarf Goats and Pigmi Goats, which are considered small animals (available for youth 5 and older to own), and large goats (available for youth 9 and older to own).
Pen Pride
This project is open to all 4-H members aged 9 and up. All youth raising animals on the farm this year will be required to participate in this community service project. Learning will take place through the Market Lamb/Goat project meetings and youth will share responsibility for feeding, weighing and exercising the lambs. This is a great opportunity to learn what it is like to raise livestock, without the commitment of having to do it on your own.
Market Poultry
Interested in raising market chickens for the County fair and preparing for the market chicken competitions? Youth will learn how to raise healthy chickens. Focus is on brooding chicks and poults, pen set up and cleaning, feeding, and preparing for the show.
Horses
Ages 13+. Project members will need to own or lease their own horse. Project members will study horse confirmation, breeds, tack & equipment and potentially prepare for the Horse Bowl. Participants will set a goal to show in a county fair 4-H show and the State 4-H Horse Show.
Leadership
This year we will be focusing on having fun while completing a Service Learning Project. (SLP) We will learn by doing both small and large group activities. This meeting occurs immediately after the executive board meeting. Mandatory for current board members. Open to members age 12 and up.
Carnivorous Plants
Join us to take a look at what makes carnivorous plants different from other plants as well as some of the common characteristics. We will look at different types of carnivorous plants from around the world: Africa, Australia, Europe, Southeast Asia, Mexico, and here in the United States. We will examine what is eaten by carnivorous plants and you will learn about how to take care of some carnivorous plants, and then plant some seeds to grow your very own carnivores!
Web Design
Ages 10+ Help add and refine our NEW Pacifica 4-H website. Skills learned will be designing user friendly and aesthetically pleasing pages, importing images/pictures and links, making drop down menus. Members will potentially be taking on a page of the club's site and maintaining it through out the year. Youth will leave with the skills to create their own webpage or site to share at the San Mateo County Fair.
Pokemon Go
Can a mobile game build competence, confidence, connection, character, and caring? Let’s find out while we walk the Pacifica outdoors, make new friends, and explore game challenges while encountering and catching Pokemon.
Chess
Learn how to play chess, tips and tricks, play with your friends traditional and alternative chess set ups. Have fun with timeless game of strategy!
Hiking and Birding
Like to be outdoors and explore? Want to get to know the coast from anew perspective?
Join this project and check out local trails while studying and observing local migratory birds.
Dog Training
Ages 7-19. Come learn how to enjoy your dog and build a working relationship with them and all of what that entails. From manners to grooming to medical, we’ll cover the basics and also have some fun with our k9 companions with a little dog party at the end. Bring your own dog (so long as it isn't aggressive) talk to me if you don't have a dog for the project. Kids 7-8 or that physically need assistance need a parent to stay through each class with them
Beginning 4-H
Geared to 4-H primaries members, i.e. ages of 5 to 9, Beginning 4-H (B4H) provides an overview of common 4-H activities and projects. Youth will then be educated to move forward in the club as an informed and experience member.
Arts and Crafts
Ages 5+. Youthh will use various materials and mediums to create arts and crafts projects to show at Life Skills Day and San Mateo County Fair.
Robotics
Ages 11+ Youth will learn about interconnections of science, engineering and technology. This "kick-off" year of Pacifica's 4-H Robotics project will have participants learning about the basics of robotics including platform, drive and control systems. They will also engage in scientific inquiry around motion, forces, chemistry and electricity to round out the project year.
